Gastronomy Above The City

20 April 2026

Following the renovation of the Citadella, a new chapter begins in the life of one of Budapest’s most iconic tourist destinations. The gastronomic concept is curated by Levente Lendvai, chef of the Michelin-recommended VIRTU restaurant, located at one of the highest points of the city.

On the terrace of the Citadella Café, a modern bar atmosphere meets Hungarian gastronomic identity, where a selection of local wines, pálinkas and craft gins awaits visitors. The highlight of the “deli” offering is a range of sandwiches made from the exclusive recipes of the renowned SALT Bakery, perfect companions for a walk on Gellért Hill and the breathtaking panorama.

The Szabadság Café is aimed primarily at guests arriving after a museum visit, with the focus firmly on pastries. Visitors are welcomed by signature sweets that both celebrate Hungarian confectionery traditions and evoke the spirit of the site itself — from the walnut-and-cream Kossuth Kifli to the Zserbó-inspired "Cannonball" dessert, and the creamy Szabadság Slice, lifted with rum-soaked sour cherries.

The Citadella's sweet offerings are headlined by chimney cakes made to a traditional, egg-free recipe, available not only in the classic vanilla and cinnamon varieties but also in walnut and cocoa. Refreshment comes courtesy of artisan ice creams crafted from premium ingredients, with standout flavours including Belgian dark chocolate, pistachio, and a special creation inspired by the beloved zserbó pastry. For those with a truly sweet tooth, a chimney cake filled with ice cream or creamy hazelnut spread rounds off the full gastronomic experience.
